One Last Look Into The Crystal Ball

Published by Joe White on March 25, 2011 | 2 Comments

As we finish up our week of predicting the future, today we take a look at who we feel could win some of the various postseason awards.  We’ll also make our postseason picks as well.

Postseason Awards

National League:

  • Cy Young: Roy Halladay – really going out on a limb here, but Halladay has proven to be as dominate as any pitcher in the last several years.  With Adam Wainwright’s injury, there’s no other clear cut possibility.  Runners up:  Tim Lincecum, Matt Latos.  Off the wall candidates:  Clayton Kershaw, Tommy Hanson, Matt Garza
  • MVP: Albert Pujols – we’re two for two as far as sticking to the front runners, but again, it’s hard to go against a player of Pujols’ caliber.  Sure, Joey Votto had a great year last year, but do you really expect Pujols to have a down year when he’s in his walk year?   Runners up:  Prince Fielder, Carlos Gonzalez.  Off the wall candidates:  Buster Posey, Jason Heyward
  • Rookie of the Year: Freddie Freeman, 1B, Atlanta – he should have an ample opportunity to succeed, as Atlanta has given the 1B job to him.
  • Manager of the Year: Ron Roenicke, Milwaukee Brewers

American League:

  • Cy Young: Jon Lester – we’ll take the best pitcher on the league’s best team, thank you very much.  Runners up:  CC Sabathia, Felix Hernandex.  Off the wall candidates:  Brett Anderson, Gio Gonzalez, John Danks
  • MVP: Miguel Cabrera.  He has a lot to prove coming off his horrible offseason, and we think that he’ll be up to the task.  Runners up:  Adrian Gonzalez, Robinson Cano, Josh Hamilton.  Off the wall candidates:  Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz
  • Rookie of the Year: Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay
  • Manager of the Year: Bob Geren, Oakland Athletics

Now that we’ve got the individual awards covered, let’s take a look at our postseason prognostications:

National League:

  • NL Central: Milwaukee
  • NL East: Atlanta
  • NL West: San Francisco
  • Wildcard: Philadelphia

NLDS:

  • Atlanta over San Francisco in 5
  • Philadelphia over Milwaukee in 4

NLCS:

Philadelphia over Atlanta in 7

Yes, we know we picked Atlanta to win the division and Philly to win the pennant, but this was based on the fact that we feel that Chase Utley will be back for the second half of the year.  Also, when you have a rotation like Philadelphia, it’s tough to beat them in a short series.  If they get into the playoffs, look out.

American League:

  • AL Central: Detroit
  • AL East: Boston
  • AL West: Oakland
  • Wildcard: New York

ALDS:

  • Detroit over New York in 5
  • Boston over Oakland in 4

ALCS:

Boston over Detroit in 5

World Series:

Philadelphia over Boston in 7 games.  This has to be the most boring prediction in the history of predictions, but it’s hard to imagine Philadelphia losing a playoff series when they can roll with Halladay, Lee and either Oswalt or Hamels twice, regardless of their offense.  It’s also hard to imagine Boston not getting to the Series when they can boast a lineup that has a top six (in some order) of Ellsbury, Pedroia, Crawford, Gonzalez, Youkilis and Ortiz.
